About the Gallery

Two centuries of considered making, kept for the rooms they were meant for

2Centuries is a gallery of antique furniture and interior objects, gathered slowly and with intent. We are drawn to pieces that have already lived a long life and were made to live a longer one still — objects whose craft, character and history reward close attention.

Our Philosophy

Why old things still matter

An antique is a record of decisions — of a maker choosing this timber, this joint, this proportion, and of the many hands that have kept it since. To bring such a piece into a room is to keep that record in use rather than behind glass. It is a quieter kind of ownership: less about acquiring, more about custody.

We believe the objects worth living with are those that improve on acquaintance. A cabinet whose grain deepens in evening light; a chair whose frame has taken the shape of long use; a table that has hosted more conversations than we will ever know. These are not merely old. They are considered, and they ask to be considered in return.

Curatorial Approach

How a piece comes to be shown

Selection begins with the object itself. Before period or provenance is discussed, a piece must hold its own in the hand and the eye — the honesty of its materials, the confidence of its construction, the balance of its lines. Where a question of authenticity remains unresolved, the piece does not enter the collection.

Craftsmanship guides what we keep. We favour work in which the making is evident and unforced, where the maker trusted the material rather than disguising it. Historical importance matters too, but never as a label; a documented period or a notable hand deepens our understanding of an object without ever standing in for its quality.

Restoration, when it is needed, is exercised with restraint. Our purpose is to keep a piece sound and legible, not to erase the evidence of its life. We would rather leave an honest mark than impose a false perfection. The aim throughout is the timeless interior — rooms composed of objects that will not date, because they were never fashionable to begin with.

Why 2Centuries

The reason the gallery exists

2Centuries exists because fine antique furniture deserves to be understood, not merely sold. Too many exceptional pieces pass quickly between hands that never learn what they are holding. We wanted a place where each object could be met properly — studied, cared for, and placed with someone who will value it for the right reasons.

The gallery is, in the end, an act of stewardship. Our part is a brief one in the long life of these objects: to keep them well while they are with us, and to see them into rooms where they will be lived with rather than stored. If we do our part quietly and honestly, the pieces will carry on speaking for themselves long after we have passed them on.

Some objects are meant to be kept. We simply help them find the next hands to keep them.
